Quick answer
  • Rain dilutes salt, chlorine and balanced water chemistry.
  • Runoff and debris add nutrients and create extra chlorine demand.
  • Early testing, cleaning and filtration can prevent a full green-pool recovery.

Rain does more than raise the water level

Heavy rain dilutes the chemicals already in the pool and can move pH and alkalinity outside their useful range. At the same time, wind and runoff carry leaves, soil, pollen and other organic material into the water.

Chlorine is then used up dealing with that contamination. If the remaining free chlorine is too low, algae can establish quickly in warm Whitsunday water.

What to do after a big downpour

Act while the water is still mostly clear. A quick check is much easier and cheaper than recovering a dark-green pool.

  • Remove leaves and empty skimmer and pump baskets.
  • Check the water level and restore normal circulation.
  • Test free chlorine, pH, alkalinity and salt rather than guessing.
  • Clean or backwash the filter if pressure or flow shows it is needed.
  • Run the system long enough to filter the extra contamination.

When the pool is already green

A green pool needs a treatment plan based on its water test, algae load, filter condition and circulation. Adding random chemicals can waste money or make the water harder to balance.

Airlie Beach Pool Service can test the pool, remove the contamination, restore circulation and map out the safest route from green to pristine.

Common questions

Helpful answers

Can one night of rain turn a pool green?

Yes. A large storm can dilute chlorine and add enough organic contamination to create very high chlorine demand, especially when the water is warm.

Should I add chlorine before heavy rain?

The right preparation depends on the current test results and your equipment. Test first or ask Jesse for advice rather than dosing blindly.

Is green pool water safe to swim in?

Stay out until the water is clear, sanitiser and pH are back in range, and the floor is visible.
